Dock 3-2 Liscard Bronze Panthers (Joey Griffiths Memorial Trophy)

1st August 2010.
Venue: Kirklands, Cammell Laird F.C.
K.O. 11.00 a.m.

Dock captured the first trophy on offer this season when they emerged with a 3.2 victory over Wallasey Premier Champions, Liscard Bronze Panthers. The Annual charity game between the Birkenhead Champions and their counterparts from Wallasey in remembrance of ex Lairds stalwart Joey Griffiths, provided Dock an opportunity to fine tune their preparation for the coming season

Once again Dock had a large squad to select from and due to the prestige of the fixture, could only field the eleven starters and three subs.

Senior players Gary Reay and the elusive Mick Saunders were absent and have been spotted in Malta….. (Coincidentally The Swinging Arm have their training camp in Malta) also absent Matty Carlin, Craig Johnson, Bernaaaard Holmes and defensive kingpin Jason Williams. Manager McGraa has introduced new faces to the squad, so much so that only seven players that ended the previous season started today’s game, those being O’Hanlon, Byrne, Donaghy, Brunt , Head, I. Mcgraa and Sean Holmes.

Jamie Kenyon made his Dock debut and produced a strong running display. The right back position was filled by youngster Tommy Hunt, who was positive and always willing to support and the left back berth was occupied by the impressive Lee Hammond. In goal was Aaron, who was solid and confident and useful with the flying head butt !
Brunty, once again, was magnificent. From the moment he stepped off the team coach with his headphones on, pausing to sign match programmes for scores of eager youngsters, this guy oozes class. He orchestrated and dominated the midfield. Prompting and probing, it is not hard to imagine him swapping passes with Xavi and Iniesta at the Nou Camp and hearing 90,000 Catalonians shouting Ole at every completed pass. In fact his nick name, ‘El fat fu@k’ (translation The Golden One) is very apt.

Shaun Holmes eventually won the game for the Dock with a fine winner in the last minute of the game and there were joyous scenes as the lads celebrated over by the Dock bench. The Joey Griffiths Memorial Trophy was presented in the Lairds clubhouse by stand-up comedian, Frankie Robbo to the Dock captain for the day, Nemanja Vidic.

My network of spies informed me that Lee Hammond was ordering trays of Shots in the Claughton later on in the night and Champers was also mentioned! There are also rumours circulating from Majorca that Jase Pack was seen in deep conversations around the pool with Babsy of the Queens and Shots and Champers are also mentioned here as well. The paparazzi are offering photo’s of the pair enjoying the sun for a four figure fee.

Pre-Season Friendly – Results

  • Wednesday 21 July 2010 Ellesmere Port 4-6 Dock AFC
  • Sunday 25 July 2010 Halfway Prenton 2-9 Dock AFC

Halfway Prenton 2-9 Dock (Pre-season frendly)

Venue: Gayton Park – Kick Off 11:00am

After Wednesday’s victory in Ellesmere Port, Dock moved onto their second pre-season friendly at Heswall F.C. and it was F.C. Prenton who provided the opposition.

Dock enjoyed a convincing win and as was the case on Wednesday, all the players enjoyed some sort of run out. Both teams started brightly and were evenly matched for most of the half. Ian Brunt was absolutely superb, running the midfield with ease, spraying his balls all round Gayton Park , he was easily the best player on view. Gary Reay, on the other hand, was absolutely awful. The recent speculation obviously affecting him as he stumbled around, at times appearing drunk, lost and confused. This ageing gunslinger is clearly shot and rumours of him entering into discussions with The Arm appear to be true as allegations of letters being sent directly to his house start to surface.

The second half was played out with Dock scoring at will and a host of substitutions made to enable the lads to get miles in the bank. Ian Brunt was afforded a standing ovation when he was replaced late on in the second half after being taken from behind, something he is very familiar with.

The stand out goals of the match……a sweetly struck shot from 20/25 yards from Young Tit. A superbly crafted solo effort from Mascherano and a well worked effort from The Igmeister ,who asked me to point out that it was in fact, he who netted last Wednesday against Ellesmere Port and not Mark Head.

All in all, it was a useful workout for the team and gave the new lads a chance to bed down and integrate themselves with rest of the boys. Onwards now to Cammell Lairds next Sunday and a chance to land what hopefully will be the first piece of silverware of the season .

A quick line on the referee’s performance…. Seemed to be on first name terms with most of the players. This new ref on the circuit could go far and is being fast tracked for greater glory. Handled Shaun Holmes well when Shaun introduced himself to him after 4 minutes when enquiring if he had a pea in his whistle ?

Ellesmere Port 4-6 Dock 21-July-2010. (Pre-season friendly)

Venue: Whitby Social Club. K.o: 6.45p.m.

The Dock stepped up their pre-season preparation by taking a large squad up to the former Shell Sports Club to take on West Cheshire outfit, Ellesmere Port managed by Polly Fearon. The large numbers enabled Mr.McGraa to field different sides for each half and everyone got decent minutes under their belts.

Just as the first half got under way, the heavens opened. This made for an entertaining half of fast and at times, slick football. I didn’t get the scorers as I was busy signing autographs for the fans who massed into the Main stand as the rain toppled down. On making enquires, it emerged that Gary Reay had netted and I think, Mark Head, along with an own goal. Dock went 2.0 up but were pegged back to 2-2 before taking a 3-2 lead and then conceding with the last kick of the first half!

The second half was played under similar conditions with water now pooling on the pitch. Charlie, Alan Mac and Javier Mascherano registered for the Dock and they ran out 6-4 winners in an entertaining game played in difficult conditions.

There were violent scenes at the end of the game as the players made their way to the dressing rooms. It emerged that Directors and the Chief Executive of The Swinging Arm F.C had approached Gary Reay and Ian Brunt with large wads of cash and five year contracts. Punches were alleged to have been thrown as McGraa and Packenham moved in. The Dock may struggle to keep Reay and Brunt now that The Arm have been purchased by The Abu Dabi Group for a reported fee of £9.00. Mick Saunders is another who is being targeted by The Arm and he is uncontactable at the moment despite text messages and voicemails being left on his mobile to discuss his future.
